We have been dealing with many employers going through the awful process of redundancies lately and time and time again they are riddled with guilt and upset at having to go down the road of redundancies. Naturally, for the employee it is a tremendously difficult time too, but, we want to address the employers here.

The reason you are having to make redundancies is that we are going through a pandemic. A never-before experienced change to lifestyles and the way everyone interacts has been forced upon us in order to protect as many lives as possible.

You did not mismanage your business.

You did not wake up and take a dislike to someone.

You did not know this was going to happen and so could not properly prepare.

You are doing the best you can to protect as many jobs as possible and to try and steer your business in an economy that is going through rapid and dramatic changes. The fact that you feel guilty and upset is a testament to your humanity.

Does any of this make it better? Probably not. It is important though to know you are not alone, yours is not the only business and by taking these steps you are making tough but necessary choices to protect as many livelihoods as possible.
